Specialist HRT Solutions for Masculinisation and Feminisation

Here’s a quick guide to our private HRT for masculinisation and feminisation, guided by our UK-based gender specialists.

Masculinisation (Trans Men)

For transgender men, the hormone administered is testosterone.

Types of Testosterone Preparations

For safety, everyone is initially started on gel. This is so our specialists can monitor for side effects and quickly adjust the medication if any occur.

After at least six months on gel, you can opt to change to injectable testosterone (if clinically suitable for you) under specialist guidance. Sustanon is a testosterone injectable which is usually self-injected every four weeks into the thigh. The other injectable testosterone is called Nebido, which is given by a nurse or doctor every twelve weeks as it cannot be self-injected.

What to Expect in Your Masculisation Timeline

By having regular blood tests during your first year on testosterone, our specialists can alter your dose to ensure that your testosterone level is within the recommended range.

When it is within the correct range, its masculinising effects become noticeable. Most people tell us that their voice deepens quite quickly after starting testosterone and that this brings them much euphoria as it enables them to pass more easily as their true gender. They also discuss how the development of facial hair and a more masculine physique aids their acceptance as men within society.

On a personal level, cessation of menses and clitoral growth can boost self-esteem and body confidence, which in turn often aids relationships and sexual function.

Feminisation (Trans Women)

For transgender women, the initial treatment is oestrogen. Oestrogen comes in different forms, which are not suitable for everyone. That’s why it is really important to discuss these with a specialist, rather than simply trying to ‘DIY’.

Types of Oestrogen Preparations

Our specialists offer tablets, patches, gel and spray. It’s important to note that none of these preparations works ‘better’ than the other. This means you will feminise just the same, no matter which one you are prescribed.

During your first year of regular blood tests, your dose will increase to bring your oestrogen level into the recommended range. In a high percentage of people, when this level is optimal, it naturally suppresses testosterone, meaning you will not need to take a ‘testosterone blocker’. This is great news, as these can be expensive and some people do experience side effects whilst taking them. Our specialists can still offer a ‘blocker’ in both tablet and spray preparations.

What to Expect in Your Feminisation Timeline

Once your oestrogen level is within the target range and your testosterone has lowered, most people are excited to let us know that they are no longer ‘troubled’ by frequent erections.

They also report the development of breast buds (early breast development), softer skin and a rounder, feminine physique. Intimately, they often explain that atrophy of the penis and testicles makes them feel more confident as a lover. Conversely, some people still want to use their penis, and that is absolutely okay. There is no right and wrong. Our specialists can prescribe medication to enable erections if it is required and clinically safe.

Masculinisation / Feminisation for Non-Binary Gender

People with a non-binary gender identity who are feminine or masculine leaning often ask for a lower dose of either oestrogen or testosterone. This is referred to as ‘micro-dosing’, whereby an individual will develop some of the sexual and physical characteristics typically attributed to either a man or a woman, but will not fully transition to live exclusively in that gendered role.

For example, a non-binary masculine-leaning person may seek testosterone to obtain a slightly deeper voice and to develop a little bit of facial hair.

Solving Common Barriers to Private Hormone Access

Eden helps you remove the common barriers that come in the way of accessing transgender hormones privately.

Needle Confidence

For clients wishing to switch to injectable testosterone, Eden can arrange private, live online training with a nurse to ensure you learn how to self-inject safely and with confidence. This service is included in your subscription.

Blood Test Facilitation

Eden gives you the widest choice of venous blood test options:

  1. Choose our Plus plan and get 4 private blood tests at home per year included

  2. Or, PAYG for our private, at-home tests

  3. Or, ask your GP to provide tests for our specialist to review

Unlike other private transgender HRT therapy providers, Eden is unique in providing at-home venous testing. We avoid using fingerprick tests due to their inaccuracy and high failure rates. Learn more about our blood testing services here.

Remote Access

Remote Access, or ‘Telemedicine’, allows you to access the care you need from the privacy of your own home and has become hugely popular since COVID.

For patients living away from major cities who need specialist care, it saves significant time and money. Plus, caring for you this way reduces our costs, allowing us to deliver high-quality services for a low, fixed monthly subscription.

Solving Common Barriers to Private Hormone Access

Navigating the Physical and Emotional Changes of Transgender HRT

Starting your medical transition is obviously very exciting, but it can also be nerve-racking. You may be full of anticipation over how quickly physical changes will occur and whether you will still be you afterwards. The first time you take your gender affirming hormones can be scary, happy and anxiety-provoking, all rolled into one.

What You Can Expect

The first few months on gender affirming hormones (often incorrectly referred to as hormone replacement therapy or transgender HRT) undoubtedly can be exciting but can also be a lonely time. During these early months, your body begins to undergo puberty related to your true gender.

If you were assigned male at birth, you may start to grow tender breast buds, become emotional and just feel a little more in touch with your feelings.

If you were assigned female at birth, you might notice that your body odour becomes stronger, your face becomes spotty and you feel a little bit snappy and impatient with people. This is all perfectly normal, but it can be frightening, especially if you don’t have a support network around you.

How Eden New Life Supports You

If you start your medical transition with Eden, your support starts on day one. Research shows that the best support often comes from people who have the same lived experience.

As well as the ability to speak directly with gender specialists regularly, Eden New Life offers free, online, facilitated group support sessions where you can chat with others who are all going through their own gender journey.

Optimising Your Results Through Holistic Health Monitoring

Positive lifestyle choices are important for everyone, regardless of gender identity. However, for transgender people seeking a medical transition, this can become even more important and making the wrong choices can impact a medical (& surgical) transition.

Surgical Considerations

For trans men, obesity can be a barrier to accessing masculinising ‘top surgery’.

Within both the NHS and private sectors, there is a strict BMI limit due to:

  • Increased surgical and anaesthetic risks

  • Higher chances of developing complications

  • Poorer aesthetic results

The same for both trans men and women wanting to access affirming genital surgeries. Surgeons may refuse to operate on people with a high BMI due to safety risks and documented poor outcomes.

Hormones, Weight and Health Risks

For trans women, obesity and smoking can significantly increase the risk of stroke when taking oral oestrogen for their medical transition.

Some obese trans men may often struggle to achieve testosterone levels in the required range for optimal masculinisation. This is because adipose tissue (body fat) contains an enzyme called aromatase, which turns testosterone into oestrogen. In some cases, increasing testosterone doses may increase oestrogen levels.

Levels usually normalise when the person achieves a BMI in the healthy range.

Supporting a Healthy Medical Transition

Healthy lifestyle choices are therefore paramount for a smooth medical transition.

For example,

  • Strength-based exercise to aid muscle mass development for trans men

  • Aerobic exercise for body shaping goals in trans women

  • Weight management and nutrition guidance

Ongoing Monitoring at Eden New Life

At Eden New Life, our specialists monitor your health parameters throughout your care.

This includes:

  • Regular blood pressure readings

  • Weight and height checks

  • Standard blood testing every 12 weeks

  • Comprehensive annual blood screening

They will interpret these parameters, alongside your overall health, to ensure you are healthy and quickly identify any issues early.

Our specialists always take a holistic approach to transgender HRT care. They care about you as a person and will always discuss your lifestyle and advise ways to help you achieve optimal health.

Our Comprehensive Intake Process

All Eden clients complete a comprehensive intake process with at least 3 specialists to ensure that they fully understand their health history and transition goals. They also undergo regular 12-weekly blood testing and blood pressure checks. We also conduct a more in-depth review annually.

After intake, all prescriptions are issued following a (at least) twenty-minute appointment with a UK-registered specialist (either a doctor, Nurse Prescriber or a Pharmacist Prescriber). This ensures that you receive an appropriate prescription tailored to your individual needs.

Our specialists can prescribe gender affirming medications and other medications to support your transition, such as medication to prevent further hair loss or erectile dysfunction, where clinically appropriate.

Eden’s Subscription Model vs. Traditional PAYG Care

Safe, effective gender affirming hormone treatment goes beyond a ‘one-time’ purchase. Rather, as you transition, you will need consistent ongoing specialist support, prescriptions and blood tests.

Our simple flat-rate subscription plans allow you to budget for your care, provide ongoing access to UK specialists and provide better long-term value than piecemeal private appointments.
