What Gender Affirming Care Really Means

Gender affirming care means getting expert advice from specialists who understand your particular needs and can provide expert guidance and, where necessary, medication so that you can achieve your transition goals safely and effectively.

Our services don't replace your GP, but do allow you to access gender affirming hormones such as testosterone and oestrogen safely and quickly under regular monitoring from UK gender specialists. Access to medication is always subject to approval.

The risks of taking powerful hormones without expert medical supervision ("DIY") are well understood. NHS gender care services often have very long waiting lists. Eden New Life aims to provide you with clinically supervised, effective and fast private trans healthcare in the UK.

Understanding Gender Dysphoria

For many people, gender is not about how they are seen by others, but how they experience themselves. When an individual’s assigned sex does not align with their deeply felt gender, this misalignment is clinically referred to as gender incongruence.

The ICD 11 classification defines gender incongruence as a marked and persistent incongruence between an individual’s assigned sex and experienced gender.

Gender Dysphoria vs Gender Incongruence

The term 'gender dysphoria' is often used interchangeably with 'gender incongruence', but this may not be clinically correct.

Gender dysphoria relates to the distress and discomfort an individual experiences that arises from this mismatch. This experience can affect many areas of life, especially adolescence and adulthood, when physical changes and societal expectations can feel increasingly misaligned with a person’s identity.

At Eden, we understand the challenges gender dysphoria can bring. For some, it results in discomfort with primary or secondary sexual characteristics. For others, it may involve a strong desire to be seen and treated in a gender they truly identify with and not what they’re assigned.

What Gender Dysphoria is Not

It’s important to understand that gender incongruence and associated dysphoria are not:

  • About following societal gender stereotypes

  • The same as being homosexual

  • The same as body dysmorphia

  • A phase or a trend

While gender dysphoria is often confused with body dysmorphia, they are entirely different. Body dysmorphia is a separate psychological condition where an individual has a distorted perception of their appearance.

Eden’s Gender Affirming Care for Gender Dysphoria

Many start feeling relief from gender dysphoria when they live their life in the gender they closely identify with. Whether it means changing their name and pronouns or adopting an appearance in sync with their gender, these changes can be validating and affirming.

But for most people, this social transition feels insufficient. In such cases, gender affirming hormone therapy helps individuals use hormones to develop secondary sexual characteristics that align closely with their true gender and identity. More than a hormone treatment, it supports their emotional well-being and allows a greater sense of comfort in their body.
