Switching gender HRT providers does not necessarily mean restarting your transition, but a new provider will need to assess your health, previous treatment and current medication before taking over care. Existing prescriptions may be reviewed or changed. Eden New Life accepts adults transferring from other providers or who have been self-medicating through its standard specialist assessment and monitoring pathway.

Changing Gender Healthcare Service Providers

Changing your gender HRT provider does not always mean starting your transition journey from step one. However, before prescribing treatment and taking charge of your gender-affirming care, your new provider has a professional responsibility to gather relevant information about your current health, previous treatment and current medication.

This means that your existing gender hormone prescription may also be reviewed and will not necessarily be continued without changes.

At Eden New Life, we accept adults who have already started gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) elsewhere, or have been DIY medicating. Our independent UK specialists consider your previous treatment and available documentation before assessing your transition goals.

In this guide, find out why people switch gender HRT providers, what happens to your gender HRT journey and what to expect when you choose Eden as your provider.

Why Do People Switch Gender HRT Providers?

There are many reasons why people choose to change gender healthcare service providers.

Accessibility

Some individuals may experience long waits for GAHT. They may also consider a switch when they find it difficult to arrange regular blood tests and prescription reviews.

Affordability

High costs can be another reason, particularly if consultations, prescriptions, blood tests and administrative services are charged separately. This may lead them to seek alternative care providers with a clearer, more predictable pricing structure.

Personal Preference

People may want a more responsive support model, quicker and easier appointment booking, more structured monitoring or a simpler way to get repeat prescriptions. They may switch from one HRT provider to another with online services, reducing the need to travel to appointments.

Quality of Care

This is one of the key factors that can influence people to switch gender HRT providers. You can switch gender HRT providers if you feel that your existing provider no longer offers the level of ongoing care and monitoring you want.

The aim when changing gender HRT providers is to keep your care continuous and safe, rather than just finding someone who can replicate your current gender hormone prescription.

Can You Switch Gender HRT Providers in the UK?

Yes, you can switch gender HRT providers. Receiving GAHT from one provider does not prevent you from approaching another provider for care. However, before the new healthcare professionals responsible recommend or prescribe any treatment, they may need to conduct their own assessments.

If you have already started GAHT with another provider, you can still join Eden New Life. We recommend that you complete our intake session so that our independent UK specialists can understand your healthcare history and previous care. We use this information when considering gender HRT and the services we can offer.

You also don’t need a GP referral to start or continue your transition journey with Eden. Read more about starting gender HRT with Eden New Life or talk to a gender specialist by booking a free introductory chat today.

What Information Will Your New Gender HRT Provider Need?

While requirements vary by provider, the new provider’s team will request enough information to understand your overall health and previous GAHT.

They may request information including:

  • Current medication, dosage and administration methods

  • Previous gender hormone medication and doses

  • Recent blood test results

  • Medical history and existing health conditions

  • Previous gender affirming care assessments and reports

  • Previous prescriptions and clinical correspondence

  • Transition goals, treatment progress and how you have responded to the treatment so far.

At Eden New Life, comprehensive blood tests form a part of safe gender affirming hormone care. If your GP is willing to help, we can accept suitable NHS blood test results provided they contain information our independent specialists need and are provided in the requested format.

For blood test results from external sources, we require a consolidated clinical test report that clearly identifies your name, date of birth and date of testing. Please note that we don’t accept screenshots.

Will You Need Another Gender Dysphoria Assessment?

Potentially. A previous diagnosis or prescription doesn’t mean that another provider will automatically accept it without conducting its own checks. This is common across all UK healthcare, not just gender care. Each specialist has to make their own diagnosis to ensure your care is appropriate.

While Eden New Life takes your existing documentation into account, our paid subscription pathway includes our own 1-hour Intake Session followed by a 30-minute Diagnosis Session with an independent UK gender specialist. These sessions review your intake information, discuss your goals, recommend blood tests and options and outline the next steps critical to your care pathway.

This specialist diagnosis is required before you can access services such as the GAHT prescription session within our paid subscription plans.

Will Your Gender HRT Prescription Stay the Same?

It may, or it may not, because changing your gender healthcare service provider doesn’t mean that your existing medication, dose or preparation will automatically continue as is.

At Eden, our independent specialists may consider:

  • Your current hormone levels

  • Recent blood test results

  • Length of time on treatment

  • Response to your current medication

  • Side effects or any other health concerns

  • Other medicines and medical conditions

  • Individual transition goals

With this information, they will determine whether your current medication or regimen is appropriate or needs to be changed. Our independent gender specialists personalise your treatment only after individual clinical assessment.

Subscribing to our plans does not guarantee a hormone prescription, which is always subject to approval by a UK doctor.

What Should You Look for in a New Gender HRT Provider?

While gender healthcare costs and access matter, switching to a new provider for lower fees can leave you paying separately for services you assumed were included. We recommend you look at the whole care pathway and establish exactly what you receive.

Consider checking the following before changing gender healthcare service providers:

  • Who assesses you and who is responsible for prescribing medication? What are their qualifications?

  • Ask which blood tests are required, how often and who reviews them. What happens if something unexpected is found?

  • Are routine specialist reviews included in the advertised price?

  • Are private prescriptions included or charged separately?

  • Is medication included or paid directly to the pharmacy?

  • Can the provider accept blood tests arranged through your GP?

  • How easily can you contact them between appointments?

  • What happens when your treatment becomes stable?

  • How are repeat prescriptions handled?

  • Does the provider have experience taking over care from another clinic/provider or working with people who have self-medicated?

A responsible provider will first establish whether a treatment is clinically appropriate for you. Be wary of services with automatic prescribing.

Moving Your Gender HRT Care to Eden New Life

Eden New Life accepts transgender, non-binary and intersex adults who have previously started GAHT with another provider, as well as people who have been self-medicating.

  • While we don’t have a distinct transfer of care service, you can start your journey with Eden by entering our regular specialist pathway.

  • You need to complete our structured intake process, which generally takes 4 to 7 weeks. Following comprehensive assessment, a specialist may recommend a GAHT prescription where clinically appropriate. However, we can’t guarantee a prescription with your subscription.

  • If GAHT is appropriate for you, ongoing care, depending on the Hormone Advisory plan you choose, may include specialist reviews, private prescriptions and regular blood test monitoring.

Choosing Eden as your gender-affirming care provider is not simply replicating your old prescription. It means establishing a safe, individually appropriate pathway for your ongoing gender healthcare needs.
